Abstract

Language politeness refers to the rules and customs which exist in a respective society. Language signifies man’s etiquette and character. The use of improper language especially on social media could cause conflict and miscommunication. Initial observations shows that social etiquette and language politeness among social media users is slowly deteriorating. This may be due to critical exposure among global society members in a social setting which indirectly has affected the Muslim community in Malaysia. Due to this scenario, the teachings of Islam have suggested some terms and guidelines that should be practiced by Muslims to maintain harmony in communication. These guidelines are based on two prime resources which are Al-Quran and Hadith. The aim of this article is to study the Islamic perspective regarding language politeness and the etiquette on social media. The research is conducted using the qualitative approach using secondary document analysis method. Data are also taken from the Al-Quran and several other articles regarding language politeness to support the primary data. Previous findings discover that even without specific directive from the Al-Quran on language politeness and etiquette on social media, results conclude that Muslims are encouraged to have good etiquettes as stated in Surah Taha (20:44) and Surah Al-Imran (3:159) which encourages Muslims to be polite in communication as it will be beneficial to fellow individuals and at the same time producing a Muslim society with good politeness and etiquettes. Politeness and good etiquettes lead to effective and harmonize communication in line with the teaching of Islam.
