Abstract

This studyusespanelARDLanalysistoinvestigatetheconnectionsbetweenGDPgrowth, environmentaldegradation,andpublicdebtintheASEAN-5countries(Malaysia,Thailand,the Philippines, Singapore,andIndonesia)from1996to2021.Itappearsthateconomicdevelopment can increasepublicdebt,butinvestmentcanreducepublicdebtinthelongrun.Moreover,thereisa positive correlationbetweensavingsandpublicdebt,butonlyintheshortrun.Thesefindingsraise important considerationsforpolicymakersinstrikingabalancebetweeneconomicdevelopment, environmentalsustainability,andpublicdebt.Thisstudyalsosuggeststhatsavingsmaypositively affectpublicdebtinIndonesia.Incontrast,investmentmayraisedebtintheshortterminMalaysia, the Philippines,andSingapore.ThepossibleeffectsofcorruptiononpublicdebtinthePhilippines and environmentaldamageinboththatcountryandThailandarealsohighlighted.Keepingpublic debt atamanageablelevelrequirespoliciesthatbalanceeconomicdevelopmentandenvironmental protection,asemphasizedbythisresearch.
