Abstract

Higher Education Institutions (HEI) have experienced tremendous impact due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The question is whether the HEIs have been capable of adopting the new normal caused by the pandemic. There has been scarce research on HEI resilience that produced empirical studies using quantitative approaches. While some formidable frameworks that conceptualize the organizational resilience have been proposed by several authors, none of these studies were able to present clear evidence of the COVID-19 pandemic of the HEI resilience, quantitatively. The current study aims to operationalize the HEI resilience framework proposed by Dudek (2020) by measuring the inter-relationships between the components of the framework using Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) method. The data from 121 public and private universities in Malaysia were collected and used as a basis for determining the significant relationships in the HEI resilience framework. The results showed that the three antecedents, i.e., anticipation, coping, and adaptation (also a higher-order construct, consisting of four lower-order constructs, i.e., knowledge-based, resources availability, social resources, and power-based) positively impacts the HEI Resilience. Meanwhile, each of the lower-order (knowledge-based, resources availability, social resources, power-based) seemed to have strong correlation with each of the higher order constructs (i.e., anticipation, coping, and adaptation). Recommendations for practice and research are discussed.
